WOW Classic Leveling Guides

Since the release of World of Warcraft in November 2004, players have fallen in love with the world of Azeroth and especially the sandbox style of the original game, which slowly changed over the years. The original release is a clear fan favorite, as we saw with the massive interest in the rerelease of Classic Warcraft in 2019. The interest in the Classic version of the game has become constant, and with the more recent release of the Anniversary Edition of Classic World of Warcraft the game is full of active players yet again.

Leveling in World of Warcraft has changed a lot over the years, in the modern version of the game (often referred to as the retail version) leveling and questing is very simplified, so even players who never stepped into Azeroth can figure out how to fast and effectively reach the maximum level. The modern versions of the game feature a linear storyline that has a clear path, but in the original game, it is a lot more open, and you can easily step into areas that might not be intended for your level or faction.

Because of this, there has been a huge development of leveling guides specifically for the Classic version of the game. Being huge fans of the original version, we have tested and used all of the different leveling guides, so we will break down our favorites and why we recommend them.

What is a leveling guide?

Leveling guides is a handbook to try and make the leveling process a lot smoother and faster. They are usually designed to make sure you do not get stuck in areas that are too difficult or too easy for your current character progression. Leveling guides for World of Warcraft saw the light of day initially when the game first released, but has over the years been more perfected, as technology and information has become more widely available.

The RestedXP Leveling Guide

RestedXP (RXP) is right now the most popular leveling guide for World of Warcraft. The guide is free to try until level 20, and after that you have to pay for access to the remaining 40 levels.

This guide tells you exactly where to go and what to pick up, and even features dungeon mode so you can pick which dungeons you want to be part of your leveling journey. The guide comes with an in-game addon, so you don’t have to have an internet browser open to follow your progress. The in-game addon lets you pick the different modes depending on what type of content you are playing. For example if you are playing Hardcore Warcraft, meaning you only have one life and there is no resurrection, you can pick survival/hardcore mode which will generally put you in leveling areas slightly below your level in an attempt to make your leveling journey safer.

RestedXP also features leveling modes for the retail version of the game, for Cataclysm Classic and Season of Discovery.

The WowHead leveling guide

With the rerelease of Warcraft, the community favorite site Wowhead got very busy writing and updating their website with guides for anything Classic related. Attunement quests, talents tree, class specific guides etc., everything is available for free on Wowhead, including their leveling guide with routes for both horde and alliance.

This leveling guide can be pretty handy, as it just gives you a better overview of what areas are suitable for your current level. The guide will not go into the same details that guides like RestedXP does, but does a pretty good job not to spoil the adventures ahead. RestedXP will very much hold your hand all the way, and makes it pretty easy for anyone to get started, and the Wowhead guide will just give you general guidelines to make sure you are not totally lost.

This type of leveling is something we would recommend for someone that hasn’t played the game before, and want to get really invested in the world, as this guide does force you to stop and think a bit more about where you are, and where you are going.

You can find the free leveling guide here. This page has links for both Alliance and Horde, and also features class guides for all classes, so you can pick sure you best the most optimal talents and abilities during your journey to level 60.

How to Pick Your Leveling Guide

If you are an experienced player that has stepped foot inside Azeroth before, then we recommend using the RestedXP guide. The guide is free until level 20, so you have 20 levels to figure out if it is something you want to continue using. RestedXP really holds your hand when you level, and doesn’t require much exploring on your own, and that can of course be a turn off for especially newer players. For these players the Wowhead leveling guide gives an easy to understand introduction to each area, and the main exploration is left unspoiled for you.
